Nemeth Wins Again but No New Record Set

Christian Nemeth made it five wins in as many years for him at the maxim sports nutrition Zurrieq Half-Marathon with the exception that this time round the Belgian failed to set a new route record contrary to the previous years.

On each occasion during the previous four years he had managed to lower his best but this time he was off the pace from early on. His first 5km split showed that he was some fifty seconds slower than the previous year, too big a gap to close off later.

Even so, he won with over a minute to spare ahead of Jonathan Balzan of St. Patrick’s AC. Balzan ran a tactically superb race, waiting for the others to tire before making his move in the final part of the race which coincided with one of its most terrible hills.

It was a move that paid off, particularly as Haitem Ksheim, his team-mate with St. Patrik’s AC had never been close to the route, let only remember where he had to run.

As expected, Carol Walsh won the women;s section with a fair degree of ease. Having spent some time recovering from the GSSE and taking out some time overseas for family reasons.

Second place went to Carmen Hili, another athlete who has been in find form of late so much that her results yesterday were the best time. Doreen Vella of the home side finished third.
